Be willing to adjust your game

You may have a good way of doing things. Are you willing to adjust your methods to become great?

A lot of players have multiple things they are good at. Solid free throw shooting, decent assist to turnover ratio, and serviceable defense can make you a contributor for a team. A player should not settle for these things. Shooting free throws at 70 percent? You may have to take some expert advice and be willing to tweak your shot to get to 75 or 80 percent.

Especially when it comes to shooting, players are often too proud to admit that they need to adjust from their old way of doing things. There have been a few players that have made it far with unorthodox shooting motions, but few of them have been considered great shooters.

You could get away with funky shooting if you make up for it in other ways like say... Dwight Howard. But let's be honest, you likely aren't Dwight Howard.

Being able to step back and take advice from those who have played the game at a high level and closely monitored the successes and failures of other players a high levels - that is how you can improve.

To be a good or great player, you will need to be able to adapt to doing things the best way possible. Keeping a low, strong dribble will reap more rewards than dribbling loose and high. Being tall will help get rebounds, but working hard at pursuing and having a nose for angles will elevate your ability. Always be willing to improve.

If you are already doing something your way or a prior mentor/coaches way at an impressive clip - that's great. A good trainer or coach can recognize that and allow you to keep doing your thing. However, if they advise you to tweak it slightly to improve consistency (like keeping your elbow in a bit more while you shoot), it can't hurt to listen and give it a legitimate try.

We may be biased, but results don't lie. The Basketball Movement is the premier training facility in this part of the country, with some of the best coaches and trainers. Anton Brookshire draws praise from NBA-level talent

Following the recent Alize Johnson Basketball Camp at The Basketball Movement, Anton Brookshire stood out to the NBA host.

Another Yanders Law standout from the recent Alize Johnson Camp at The Basketball Movement, Anton Brookshire turned some heads as he often does. This time, he caught the eye of the camp’s host, Missouri State alum and Indiana Pacer, Alize Johnson.

Johnson was great with the athletes of all ages at his camp, giving encouragement, challenging, and growing together on his already impressive basketball journey. Giving back to the communities that helped along the way is an important piece for professional players. In doing so, they are likely to come across some young ballers that they empathize with and connect to.

“He reminds me of myself,” Alize said about Anton. “He is really humble and not necessarily trying to be big-time.”

This is high praise, especially for a player like Anton who doesn’t seek the spotlight. He simply gets in the gym every single day, trying to improve upon every facet of his game and become a leader on the court. With that, the spotlight will come, but to not seek it directly is an important key on his path.

Alize gave Anton several social media shoutouts and even offered to follow the first 100 people that went to follow his “little brother” Anton on Instagram. Again, Anton isn’t one for the spotlight, but these were cool moments for the young player.

He really knows who he is, which is big at that age - not everyone is like that. He knows he can have it all, but he doesn’t let that make him bigger than anyone. He can be a pro.

Often times, it takes a pro to know a pro, which should be an exciting prospect for Brookshire. It takes more than that though, and the work will not stop until a player is ready to hang it up. Luckily, we know Anton well enough that it is apparent he won’t stop. To have been on the grind so much already displays his dedication - something that will only grow as he inches closer to all of his goals as a player.

With the necessary drive and all the right tools, Anton Brookshire is well on his way to achieving all of his on-court goals. As a young man, he seems to already possess the qualities needed to be successful off the court as well.

We want to thank Alize Johnson for working with many of our athletes. Opportunities to learn from NBA-level talent means you had a chance to work with one of the best in the world. Props again to Anton for standing out in all the right ways. The best is still yet to come!

Zach Howell shows out at Alize Johnson Camp

The Basketball Movement recently hosted the Alize Johnson Basketball Camp, and Zach Howell showed out.

NBA player and Missouri State alum, Alize Johnson has long been an ally of The Basketball Movement, so it was a natural fit for him to host his summer camp there. An opportunity to learn from one of the best, the camp had a lot of players show up, including many familiar Yanders Law faces. Perhaps no one player showed up quite like Zach Howell.

There was a nice showing from area boys and girls in the 7th-12th grade camp. There were players of varying skill, but one of the clearest standouts was our own Zach Howell of Catholic High School here in Springfield.

During drills, Zach was out-hustling many of the other players and stepping up to the plate to flawlessly execute many of the tougher drills. During scrimmage situations, he showed that he was not afraid to put a team on his back, raining terror from beyond the three point line. Oh, and he threw down some impressive dunks, during breaks as well.

Zach’s growth during his time with Yanders Law and working out with The Basketball Movement has been ongoing for some time, but appears to have really taken off as of late. He is coming off of a strong summer with us and will no doubt make plenty of varsity noise for Catholic this season.

We just wanted to give Zach a shoutout since he has clearly been putting in big time work on his game. We see you, young fella. Keep at it!

Rob Yanders Founder / Owner

A program like Yanders Law is nothing without its fearless leader. Ours is great basketball mind and former pro, Rob Yanders.

About

Rob Yanders, owner and director of The Basketball Movement and Yanders Law, trains some of the best talent in the country. From top high school talent to NBA players, his training methods are sought after by elite players continually striving to get better. As lead director and head of player development, he has worked with multiple top-100 HS players in the country.

Notable names such as Mike Foster, Patrick Baldwin, Harlong Beverly, Charles Smith IV, Jabari Sibley, Emanual Miller, Anton Brookshire, Isaac Lindsey, Nobal Days, Desi Carton, Jalen Thomas, Chris Hodges, Adam Miller, Xzavier Jones, and Desmond Polk are among the players that look to coach Yanders for help in elevating their game.

As someone who has played at every level, his tutelage is an asset to these young men as they proceed with their dream of achieving the highest level of play available to them.

His workouts with NBA players Monte Morris, Deonte Burton, and Alize Johnson have become stories passed around from training camp to training camp, leading to more and more calls from current and prospective pros looking for help as they climb the ladder of success.

He has consulted with multiple NBA teams (including Lakers, Magic, and Pelicans) as they design and implement their own development programs.

Career

Yanders’ basketball career began in Milwaukee at Vincent High School, where he helped lead the Vikings to three State Basketball Championships in 1996, 1997, and 1998. Yanders went on to play at MSU – West Plains and is their only two time All-American.

Yanders was honored as a member of the 1999 USA National Team that toured New Zealand and was inducted into the MSU – WP Hall of Fame in 2007.

Yanders went on to play at Missouri State University in the Missouri Valley Conference under coach Barry Hinson, earning “All-Conference Honors.” He started every game he played from 2000-2002, averaging 11 points, 5.5 assists, and grabbing an impressive 6 rebounds per game.

He played 12 years as a pro, spending his first seven seasons playing in the BBL. As a pro, he started over 300 games, scoring 4,600 points with over 1,500 assists. He ranked 6th on the all-time BBL list. Yanders was a part of the 2009 Great Britain national team that earned the 2012 Olympic bid. After his first seasons playing abroad, Yanders was invited to the Milwaukee Bucks NBA free-agent camp.

During his time in the UK, Yanders won practically every individual and team honor available in the domestic game. Yanders won three European Championships, two regular season Championships, a National Cup, and Finals MVP. In France, Yanders was also voted team MVP with both VCB and KABCA teams and earned All-Star Team honors in 2012.

Training and skill development vs. shooting around

Anytime you have a ball in your hands is an opportunity to get better. Be sure to make the most of your time with The Basketball Movement.

The most successful players make plenty of time to get up shots, work on their conditioning, and hone their craft. Almost any time that can be spent with the sport of basketball will improve your game, even if it is just an imperceptible amount.

There is a big difference however between shooting around in the driveway, park, or gym compared to structured and intentional training. You can get a lot of free throws in at the park near your house, but what if your elbow is too wide from your body or you are not bending your knees enough?

Nothing beats supervised, disciplined training when working to improve as much as possible. This is not to say that messing around in your driveway at home or just playing "21" after school are not good. Basketball is a game after all, and doing anything active and fun is time well-spent. Just remember when it comes to improving, there is such a thing as time best spent.

One-on-One: Connor Killian

Our final conversation that took place ahead of the NY2LA Spring Warm Up in Milwaukee was with sophomore, Connor Killion.

Connor Killion recently finished up his sophomore season with East Newton High. He said that the season was a bit of a struggle at times and the team finished below .500. “We had great team chemistry, but things never quite came together” said Killion.

He said that he is excited to get spring and summer ball underway. “School ball is always very structured, where this stuff is a lot more loose and free.” He also said that his biggest takeaway from the season was stepping up as a leader after earning a starting role. “I also worked to establish myself as an offensive threat” Connor continued.

Killion will try and carry that scorer mentality into his second year with Yanders Law, where he plans to be a scorer and shooter, while remaining unselfish with the basketball. In his short time with Yanders Law and coming to The Basketball Movement, he says that he is impressed with the progress that has been made.

East Newton High is 73 miles from The Basketball Movement. Coach Lou Carasquillo had the connections to get with Connor and it has been a great fit.

With the first tourney of spring wrapping up and much more action on the horizon, we asked what Killian intends to work on this season with Yanders Law. “I want to keep focusing on my leadership to always be a role model for any team I’m on. For this team I want to fill my role and keep improving upon my strengths.”

As Connor Killian and Yanders Law Basketball continue to put in work this spring and summer, we look forward to seeing continued growth. There are many good things in store for the program coming up, so be sure to keep checking back in with us!

One-on-One: Chris Ward, new Trainer and Coach

The Basketball Movement and Yanders Law are excited to announce the hiring of Yanders Law alum, Chris Ward as a Trainer and Coach.

Yanders Law is selective in it’s hires, and we know exactly what we are getting in Chris Ward. Chris has been coming around the gym and working with Robert Yanders long before Rob bought the facility and turned it into The Basketball Movement. Ward was among the first to play under the Yanders Law banner and has been involved with what Rob has been doing ever since.

“Being on Rob’s first Yanders Law team, it’s great to come back and get to be around the other generations” said Ward. He is not only a Yanders Law alumni, but a familiar face for many area hoops fans as well. Ward’s jersey is retired at Kickapoo High School where he was an All-District and All-State player.

Chris went on to play at Philander Smith College in Little Rock and even played professionally in the Republic of Georgia for a while. He knew that his passion for basketball was well-suited for training and coaching, so he came home and is now back where it all began.

Knowing Rob since he was 10 and playing with him since he was 14, Chris says that it is incredible to see what Rob has built since then. He recalls winning a lot of games with Yanders Law in high school. Those are times you don’t forget - especially with so many takeaways that come from working with Yanders.

Playing for Rob was and is worth it. He teaches you consistency and that hard work can take you lots of places. Summer workouts, everything, it all sticks with you. Rob is all about character and using basketball as a tool to give you a better life. It all stems from hard work.

Ward says that he is going to be giving lessons, doing strengths and conditioning, and helping to run clinics in addition to becoming a Yanders Law Coach. “It’s a job, but I get to be working every day with people that want to be better” says Ward. “Basketball is everything to me; it makes it easy to get up in the morning. So yeah, it’s a job, but it doesn’t feel like it to me.”

Asked about his training/coaching style, Chris says that he will naturally emulate Yanders. “I mean, I’m just going to do what I’ve learned from Rob over so many years.” He says that he is loud, energetic, and quick to relate to the players because he has been in their shoes. “As a coach, I like fast pace. I want to really see my players getting up and down the floor.”

Having played for Robert Yanders, Ward knows the meaning of “hard work” and it is probably not a term he would use lightly. Players that get to work with Ward will experience second-hand Yanders intensity, so they will need to come ready.

The Basketball Movement and Yanders Law are thrilled to help Chris Ward bring his basketball journey full circle. Watching players pursue their passion (basketball or otherwise) is one of the greatest feelings for coaches, trainers, and anyone else that is a part of our organizations. He will be another tremendous asset to our team.

Yanders Law's Isaac Haney at The Basketball Movement

YANDERS LAW SOPHOMORE, ISAAC HANEY HAS BEEN DOING BIG THINGS FOR DORA AND IS LOOKING LIKE A STRONG D-1 TALENT.

Fresh off of a 48 point scoring blitz with nine assists against Lutie (Theodosia, MO) and helping Dora win the Cabool Holiday tournament, Isaac Haney just can’t help but get back in the gym. Luckily for the both of us, that gym is located in the heart of The Basketball Movement.

For a long time, Haney has been putting in crazy work at The Basketball Movement and for Yanders Law teams. His relationship with our coaches has come easily; he has the hard-working, nose to the grindstone mentality that we thrive on.

In only his second year of high school at a smaller school in Dora, Isaac “Ice” Haney has been getting plenty of collegiate attention. He has outstanding offers from Clevelend State and Grambling while receiving interest from Missouri State and Nebraska Omaha.

In speaking with The Basketball Movement, Haney says that he has been focusing on multiple areas of his game. “I’ve been refining all my skills - getting better at finding holes in the defense, improving my mid-range game, and getting more athletic and stronger.” Not only has Isaac added a few inches of height just recently, but his efforts to get stronger are clearly paying off as well.

We asked Isaac if there were any players he is modeling his game after. His initial response was “Steve Nash” because he likes to be in control, distribute, and still get his (though Nash never dropped 48). He did also mention that he has a JJ Redick mentality, highlighting his quick-trigger. The nod to Redick actually makes a lot of sense when watching Haney in action.

ISAAC HANEY AT THE BASKETBALL MOVEMENT

From the pressbox at The Basketball Movement, you can take in every bit of action in the facility. Coach Rob was working with Isaac recently (while his media crew filmed with a drone by the way... this place is next-level) and getting up jumpers. Haney’s jumper actually looked like JJ Redick’s shooting form. If you know hoops, you know that spells perfection. His follow through just screams shooter.

Coach Rob gushed about getting to help Haney grow over the years.

This kid is a great player. He has a savage mentality that always makes you feel like he can win you the game. He is making a case to be the best sophomore in Missouri right now.

Normally when you see Rob throw an hour on the clock, you know you are about to see someone get their butt kicked. Watching Haney, you get the sense that he loves the pain. The tired forearms, the mental strain to lock into a Rob workout, and the jelly legs are things that most players dread. Haney knows that means he is improving. That is why he keeps coming back.

The Basketball Movement is easily the best place to come. Rob is one hundred percent the best in the business. In my time here I have improved by leaps and bounds in all ways.

Isaac Haney is not going to stop improving, which means he won’t stop coming to The Basketball Movement. Haney knows where to go for the best of the best. We are simply thrilled to have gotten to know and watch as another young man betters himself everyday.
